study songs

I’ve moved away from burning the midnight oil in order to produce learning materials (that would be Flash, php and javascript files) in favour of building spaces for learners to create content and interact (Moodle).  But some funding came up recently for a Flash project from the LSN; I spent most of the money with Chris Savage (an absolute wiz with not only web programming, but understanding what I’m trying to do!).

The result was the Study Songs project, which uses a song as the basis for a learning session focusing on listening skills, aural skills and some analysis.  It’s not quite right yet, but I’m delighted with the result.  The files Chris constructed allow me to re-use his programming by simply choosing  a different song mp3, video introduction and questions (which are written in an XML file) so I don’t touch the Flash files at all.  For a teacher, the chance to work with a web programmer is an ideal model I feel, rather than expect teachers to become web professionals over night.  I’ve blogged about this before.

This looks great, it’s a very nice way to study songs!
Some time ago I encountered an interval trainer (http://www.popschoolmaastricht.nl/homepage_frameset.htm?page=college_intervaltrainer) and a chord trainer (http://www.popschoolmaastricht.nl/college_akkoordentrainer) but they do not work and look as nice. Would you consider building something alike? Guess the time/money object also plays an important role here…
    All the best,
    Bas

Thanks Bas - I had a look at those sites, though I’m struggling with the Dutch language! There is some other great stuff at http://www.musictheory.net
